April 26, 2024Baltimore Bridge Update:
Limited-Access 35-Foot-Deep Temporary Channel Set to Open Today
The USACE (U.S Army Corps of Engineers) has made great progress clearing out the Port of Baltimore waterways where the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed last month. They are now able to open up a 35-foot-deep channel for temporary access in and out of the port starting today, April 25 through the end of the month (April 29 or April 30, depending on weather).
The limited access channel (LAC) will then close again until around May 10 so that extraction teams can continue clearing the channel for full capacity use. The USACE still plans on having the full 50-foot channel reopened by the end of May.
This temporary channel will allow access for limited commercial vessels, as well as an exit for vessels that have been stuck in the port since the collapse. Any vessel using the LAC will need to have a Maryland State Pilot and two (2) escort tugs, as well as a 3 foot under keel clearance to travel through the channel. The Port of Baltimore released the below statement on Tuesday April 23 with more information on the LAC.
