September 12, 2024Canadian Rail Strike Update
Just over 24 hours since the railway strike began, Canadian railway workers at CN returned to work on Friday, August 23. The Canadian government intervened after the negotiations between the two railways and the union failed to reach an agreement.
About 75% of Canada’s exports are transported by rail to the US. Since both CN and CPKC are the two largest railways in Canada, this strike would have significantly disrupted the supply chain throughout the country and, over time, the US as well.
While the CN rail operations have resumed, the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB), an independent third party, will continue to facilitate negotiations between the Teamsters Union and both rail companies.
