TRUMP TO IMPOSE TARIFFS ON CANADA, MEXICO, AND CHINA
February 1, 2025TARIFF UPDATE: New Tariffs on China and Hong Kong, Tariffs Paused for Mexico and Canada
The White House issued Executive Orders that new tariffs will be issued for goods entered for consumption on February 4th, 2025. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has published Federal Register notices to implement the tariffs imposed on and China and Hong Kong by President Trump on Saturday, Feb. 1. Currently Mexico and Canada tariffs are on hold for 30 days.
The China/Hong Kong tariffs will be 10% and in addition to any existing tariffs.
All tariffs will include those entered into a Foreign Trade zone. Drawback will not be available with respect to these additional duties and de minimis (under $800 value) shipments will not be allowed. This new tariff will not apply on goods subject to chapter 98 except for some tariffs in tariff heading 9802.
Customs is working diligently to put this in place as quickly as possible. Although they may not be able to program on 2/4/25, we can assure you that any entries with an entry date of 2/4 and beyond will requirement payment of those additional duties.
This morning President Trump reached an agreement with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and later in the day with Canadian President Trudeau to delay the imposition of the 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada for at least a month, as negotiations continue between the two countries.
